The thing is that I am doing a project for my school and I can't find a place on teh internet where I can find what computers can do.

computers work with logic. There are human interface computers, like your home computer and laptop, like playstations, mobile phones, even chips built into your fridge and car. Then there are business computers, that you encounter everytime you use a cash machine, book an airline ticket....

computers solve logical problems, and make calculations with logic.
everything except wash your car. the term computer is so wide open it just can't be nailed down to one category...a pencil is a computer in that it can be used to calculate and compute.....a phone is a computer as it can be used to manipulate information across several different platforms.

A personal computer can't do anything, at least not with out some sort of human input...so to answer your question, a computer cannot "do" anything...it can only calculate and produce results based on the input.....what it can be used for is a better question and in that case, it can be used for a variety of things from information retrieval to communications across several languages....but at its core its really just a really powerful calculator, it just reads and writes 1's and 0's and translates that information into a result.

I'm old enough to remember using a typewriter! as a photographer I spent days in a darkroom. As an engineer I spent years at a drafting table W/pencil/Pen... computers changed all that... so what did you do before Computers came about? ...What did you do that computes have changed how its done?...was it better the old way?

I have some really great memories of helping my dad develop photographs in his darkroom. He used to be a draftsman for Delaval (spelling?) Separator Company, before CAD.

I think that technology is great but it has taken away the element of artistry that used to be required to do these jobs.

Sometimes I think the old days were better.....

I personally did not have a job before computers.....maybe my generation would have a better work ethic if we did!

I read the newspaper, wrote letters, went to the library, got my film developed, bought artbooks, cookbooks, magazines, played board games, watched the local news for the weather.....

I don't need a DUAL CORE MILLION, since the latest technology is expensive and becomes outdated within a week. I just need it for games etc... Could i play GTA SAN ANDREAS and other similar games nicely on these types of computers? And out of the 2, which laptop do u prefer?

Hello; These laptops are fine for the average user! You can be bogged down, by using too many apps and features in vista... it's a resource hog! I downgraded my entry level laptop to XP, cuz I had a legal copy lying around... and it is much faster!

I think that's a good price, but check out www.tigerdirect.com, and don't be shy of getting a refurbished laptop... the older technology ram is cheaper, and xp pro or MCE is better than vista... for now. As a Canadian, I'm surprised you arent into Linux!

I don't know what the laws/rules are for Canadians buying from websites, and having PCs shipped from the US, but you might want to also look at Dell's auction page; www.dellauction.com, that bypasses ebay, and gets you directly to Dell's auction page. Again, I don't know what the rules are for buying across the border, so take these tips as they are.

BSOD is due to a conflict between your hardware drivers and/or operating system. Also, it may be caused by a malfunction of a hardware of your computer (i.e. video card, sound card, etc...), this is due to dust accumulating, olderness of the componentsd, etc...
When you're as big as Microsoft and have absolutely not competition, your don't need to spend a lot of time making sure your system is bug free. If Windows crashes to the point where it can no longer recover by reloading the offending files a DOS error message appears offering all kinds of totally useless information for the average user. Microsoft is trying to impress you that it cares, but we all know they couldn't care less. Why should they? You can't go to the computer store and purchase a better system. Some readers will say that's garbage, just load Linux instead. Well just go ahead and try. I doubt that any software on your hard disk will work, especially your graphics programs and games. So you have to live with the Blue Screen of death because after 12 years of trying, Microsoft still can't get Windows to do what it's expected to do. Don't get me wrong, Linux is fantastic, but the mainstream software developers won't produce programs for it. Until they do, Microsoft rules!
If you have deadstoped your computer it makes a dent in your harddrive which means that what is what you proberly have a dernt in your harddrive meaning that your computer will give you the blue screen like it did to me today

Its a cat 5 crossover cable and the colours are differnt on each end.

You just need to buy a cheap network card for the second computer or buy a router and a network card.

I have a router and three computers attached to it, (like a star), One with Win XP%26 two with Win 98. High speed internet cable (Co-axel) goes to router. Depending on your router setup, you may already have everything you need. If the router is configured as a DHCP server (auto obatin IPs) than take the IP of the computer you want to get files from and type it into the address bar of my computer in this format \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx this will open the other computer regardless of work group. make sure that you have file sharing turned on by right clicking the folder you want to share, go to sharing and enable it. if you have any more questions you can email me and i will explain it a little better.

There are different versions that may do what you want. The free version allows you to access other computers that you've installed it on via the web. I use it to support many of my family and friends' computers. There are extra security features that you can choose too in the free version. That all depends upon how you wish to connect them. The usual methods would be Remote Desktop Connection or VPN from computer 1 into computer 2, but those are really one-way connections.
