Connecting 2 computers via ehternet?

Is there a way to connect 2 computers via Ethernet on a file sharing basis? I have tried and the message I get is it is unplugged when I know it isn't.

There are a few things you need to do to connect two computers via ethernet.

First if you do not want to use a hub, you will need a special "cross-over" cable. The wires are flipped from one end to the other unlike the regular ethernet cables which are "straight-through" cables with pin 1 to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, etc.

Second, since there is no server to give the computers their IP Address you will need to give each computer a fixed address. For example one computer can be 192.168.1.100 and the other 192.168.1.101. Both with a netmask of 255.255.255.0

To set the IP Address you will need to find the Network Connetions screen under the Control Panel. And set the properties of the Local Area Connection. Find the TCP-IP settings and select the Use this IP Address setting and set your IP Address. The gateway and DNS information can be left blank for your application.

I dont agree with the Best Awnser.a hub would work fine. but why not just go to staples or bestbuy and pick up the cheepest router you can find. they always have a $10 netgear. Report It

then there will be one cat5 in the routers box so pick up one more. plug it all in ... and DHCP (which is "built" into the router) will take care of everything else Report It

connect the hub to the electicity!

Gd Luck
