three common ways,

first if the printer itself is a network printer it will have an Ethernet port on it plug it into the router just like its another computer, and follow the instructions that came with it to install it, this should be done on both computers.

second get a print server router they work good, but often don't fully work for the operations like scanning because more then one computer is connected to it.

third set up home networking and share the printer from the computer that its plugged into, then install it on the other and it should work, but the primary computer needs to be on in order for the printer to be used. also home networking slows down windows something wicked, so i don't recommend it unless you cant use the other methods
get a printer router. Best Buy for like 50 bucks maybe less
on windows xp, go to printers and faxes option, then click the add printer, then next, the choose a network printer, or a printer attached to another computer... then just follow the instruction...

How do computers store Information on there hard drives?

Is the data electricity? Would an EMP attack erase all informatioon on hard drives in its blast radius?

I know alot about computers but just always thought about that but never asked.

Thanks!

Yes! Information is stored magnetically on the disks. I guess in retrospect it would depend on how close, and how strong the electromagneticpulse was to the computer. Just my 2cents!

Are ACER computers high quality?

The Acer brand of computers are appealing to me but I am unfamiliar with them so I want to make sure before I buy one. Im looking at laptops. Do they work well?

10 pts to whoever tells me the most, and the truth

Acer laptops come built with excellent specifications, the processor ram and video-card are all really good quality. The down side to Acer is that you have this incredible machine but then Acer decides to lessen the quality of the casing and connections. I've seen dozens of Acer laptops get returned due to faulty connections inside of the laptop and the cases being plain cheap. If your not going mobile a lot with this laptop and your super careful then go ahead and buy it, but if you need a strong durable laptop go Toshiba. Acers do run well and come with excellent software to help protect and run your system, I'm not saying Acer sucks or anything along those lines, i'm just telling you the truth about the way they built their machines.

Recommendations:

-Dell Inspiron 1520/1720

-Hp dv series

-Alienware

Help needed for networking 10 computers in a community centre?

Hi there

My name is Adam and i am currently doing a GAP year volunteering at a community centre in Liverpool which runs after-school clubs and other activities during the week. We have just recieved 10 desktop pc's from the local school and we are looking to connect each of them to an Internet connection in which the room the pc's are likely to be used in already has a telephone connection.

The computers are quite old as they use the following specs:

Pentium 3 Processor

64mb RAM

10Gb Hard-disk-drive

Windows 98 Operating System

What i would like to know is, what would be the most appropriate networking solution for these computers to be linked to the Internet, in which the room has an area of at least 16foot and also are there any organisations/charities that can provide grants to help cover costs for netowork and Internet setup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Windows 98 will work, but Windows XP would be easier to configure.

You NEED more memory - Have someone donate memory to you, or get it cheap off Ebay - You will need 512Mb MINIMUM, or else, these will run really slow

The hard disk size is fine - You will need to buy NETWORK cards. I am "assuming" the PC's have PCI slots, so you can buy PCI Ethernet cards. You will also need to buy a 12 port hub to plug all of the computers connections into. This is hrdwiring. You could also go wireless, but will still need to install network cards, and is more costly.

Is it OK to shut off all computers on a home network for several hours?

I recently set up DSL with 2 computers, and for security reasons, I prefer to turn off the computers at night before going to bed or on vacation. I know I could turn off the modem/router, but other computer users aren't into remembering this. Thanks.

If security is the main reason you are turning your computer off, and you are turning your modem/router off then you don't need to power off your computers. Your main threats on a computer have to come from outside your computer. Like CDs, Floppys, Internet, etc. If you power off your router then nobody can "see" your home network. So, no you don't need to power off your computer for security reasons. If you have a good firewall, you wouldn't even have to turn off your modem/router.

But, if you are just trying to save power then turn 'em off.

turn them off if your not using them. why run the parts if you do not need to.
You shouldnt have to,you are more acepable to trigger a stored virus on your computer by turning it on and off constantly throughout the day i leave mine running days at a time untill it gets sluggish then i restart. But for security reasons go ahead turn off the modem or get better protection by mcafee such as firewall and internet type protection programs.
Why wouldn't you be able to?
All here says yes I say not if you or the other users turn the PC:s on and off several times each day.

Startup takes power and your HD:s dont like it...

So if its ok or not depends how often.

For just some hours: no.
Why waste the electricity... turn those computers off... the network will still be there when you turn it back on
yea bro
yes. of course it is okay.
ya
i usually turn mine off all the time i go to sleep, doesnt cost much, and saves elec. in a way

computers work with logic. There are human interface computers, like your home computer and laptop, like playstations, mobile phones, even chips built into your fridge and car. Then there are business computers, that you encounter everytime you use a cash machine, book an airline ticket....

computers solve logical problems, and make calculations with logic.
everything except wash your car. the term computer is so wide open it just can't be nailed down to one category...a pencil is a computer in that it can be used to calculate and compute.....a phone is a computer as it can be used to manipulate information across several different platforms.

A personal computer can't do anything, at least not with out some sort of human input...so to answer your question, a computer cannot "do" anything...it can only calculate and produce results based on the input.....what it can be used for is a better question and in that case, it can be used for a variety of things from information retrieval to communications across several languages....but at its core its really just a really powerful calculator, it just reads and writes 1's and 0's and translates that information into a result.

What did you do before computers?

I'm old enough to remember using a typewriter! as a photographer I spent days in a darkroom. As an engineer I spent years at a drafting table W/pencil/Pen... computers changed all that... so what did you do before Computers came about? ...What did you do that computes have changed how its done?...was it better the old way?

I have some really great memories of helping my dad develop photographs in his darkroom. He used to be a draftsman for Delaval (spelling?) Separator Company, before CAD.

I think that technology is great but it has taken away the element of artistry that used to be required to do these jobs.

Sometimes I think the old days were better.....

I personally did not have a job before computers.....maybe my generation would have a better work ethic if we did!

I read the newspaper, wrote letters, went to the library, got my film developed, bought artbooks, cookbooks, magazines, played board games, watched the local news for the weather.....
